Desert Livelihood
The Harasiis tribe of Oman has long maintained a camel and goat herding subsistence economy. With the introduction of the first motor vehicle into the Jiddat il-Harasiis in 1975, increasingly more households have purchased four wheel-drive vehicles. Today nearly every household has a vehicle, if not too, which they need to maintain. Over time, at least one member of each family has had to engage in wage labour in order to support these machines. This is their contemporary struggle: to get training and employment in the petroleum industry which is extracting oil from the territory they inhabit.
