The Azbah (Azab, pl.)

The Azbah is a traditional Arabic term for the temporary camel camp which is set up when the main camp is more than a few days march.  In more recent times it is often used to define the mobile camp (or in Egyptian dialect the ‘farm’) where the main herds of camels and goats are kept and which are often managed by hired herders from the Indian sub-continent and Baluchistan.    The azbah is also the place where families gather together on holidays and over weekends and where social events are often held.

Each Harasiis family unit generally has a fixed permanent household near schools and other government services and an azbah where the desert livestock are looked after. The latter is moved regularly depending on where natural grazing might be available.  In recent times, the azbah is often the place where family celebrations are held; where a camel might be slaughtered to celebrate the safe return of a family member from abroad for medical treatment or to conclude a contract of marriage and the ensuing wedding party.  Such events generally include the gathering together of a number of family mobile camps.  Often local dignitaries from adjacent tribal groups are invited to share in the celebrations and to enjoy freshly slaughtered and cooked goat or camel meat with the extended families.

Materially the azbah includes a portable kitchen, several mobile cabins, a water bowser, and other portable equipment, such as marquees, to create shaded areas to sit together.   The azbah in the 'Celebration' gallery images had a marquee for greeting guests and for eating the ceremonial meal. It was carpeted with artificial grass, and in the middle it held a ‘mangal’ for coffee and tea to serve visitors as they arrived as well as large receptacle for fruit- dates, apples oranges, grapes, pomegranates, pineapple, and other fruit. In the later evening the marquee served as a place to sleep for some visitors and family members.  Others slept in the air conditioned mobile cabins.
